Netflix Shows You Need to Binge

Amani Soorty

14/05/2020

Since the beginning of quarantine, many of us have gone through almost dozens of Netflix shows, glued to our laptops and far too comfy in bed with way too many snacks. I am, of course, one of those people. I’ve found myself rewatching 90’s rom coms and going through genres I’ve never tried before. Netflix now has so many more movies and shows coming out every week and a new recommendation algorithm so that you know how much you will like a show before you have started. So here are my favorite Netflix Flicks from the past eight weeks!

Certainly, we are now in a situation that no one could have predicted. With online courses in place for the past few months due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many students share the feeling that they miss normal life before the quarantine. A lot of us may have complained about the stress of going to school, but York Mills students do miss school. A lot.

10 Things to do in Quarantine

By: Elizabeth Xu

May 5, 2020

For many students, quarantine might have been a dream come true. No school, no tests, no strict schedules. But now that we’ve been in quarantine for such a long time, most of us might be starting to get bored. Here are 10 things to do when you are bored.

    1. Cook. Learn how to make your favorite food. Consider easy recipes to start with like cake or cookies. It will always be worth it at the end.
    2. Exercise. It is the time to get active now that it’s hard not to eat and sit all day.
    3. Read. With so much free time, try reading a book. It is a great way to escape the anxiety or boredom you might be facing. Check out Goodreads for book suggestions.

The art of music has been around for thousands of years, inspiring new people every single day. Many find music as a way of relaxing, entertainment and learning new skills. It trains the mind and the body with different new abilities such as coordination and helping your brain process information quicker. In an interview with York Mills’ music teacher Ms. Howe, she described her experience with advancing into music as a profession after high school and has given tips about why someone should go into music.

Math as a Career — Our Future

Friday, March 13th, 2020

By Amani Soorty

Many students are told that math is used in everyday circumstances…but where can we see this? Many York Mills students are high achievers, going into tougher programs and universities requiring the grade twelve maths; data management, calculus and vectors, and advanced functions, for even the simplest of programs where you could not imagine yourself using mathematics. But on the other hand, some students want to be working in almost entirely math-related fields such as engineering. The best places to go about whether you love or hate math is to our beloved math teachers, such as Mr. Simpson, the head of the math department, where we asked these common questions for students and parents worried about their mathematical long term relationships

Theatre Career Path

By Jenny Zhao

May 1, 2020

Dramatic arts or theatre might not be a popular post-secondary choice among most high-school students, but it is definitely a program that helps them develop and accumulate life-long skills and personal qualities. While students learn to work collaboratively and creatively, drama and theatre study cultivate their artistic skills, enhance their communication abilities and provide them with so many perspectives to see the world. But the most fascinating moment has to be when the curtain opens, and all the shine of the spotlight falls on the actor.

1. Thrifted fits

Lately, the 80s and 90s trends have been making its way back into style. For instance, scrunchies, mom jeans or color block jackets. Students tend to shop at thrift stores to find these old trends. For example, Black Market, Value Village and the Salvation Army.

2. Oversized sweatshirts

Everyone loves this unisex styling trick since it’s cute and comfortable. An oversized hoodie paired with any sneakers is everyone’s go-to outfit especially when you’re in a rush. For the girls, they usually pair it with Lululemon leggings if you want to go for a sporty look. On the other hand, boys usually pair big hoodies with blue ripped denim and a pair of fresh Jordans.

3.Monochrome outfits Screen Shot 2020-05-03 at 9.53.15 PM

The monochromatic outfit would consist of only one color from head to toe. This fashion trend enables you to wear different shades and tints of the same color. By doing this, it can easily spice up your look and make your outfit stand out from the rest.

4. Layering tops

Screen Shot 2020-05-03 at 9.53.19 PMLayering is a critical style skill York mills students use as during the cold season. Layering can consist of wearing a turtleneck and hoodie outside. This will keep you warm and comfortable throughout the day. However, if the weather gets warmer through the day, you’re able to remove the layer on top which is very convenient. As you can tell, this method is very clever and fitting for school.
