On Tuesday, October 16, on behalf of YM Highlights, we conducted an online survey for students. The survey consisted of six questions asking students about their school grades, their thoughts on their grades, and the standard they and their parents set for themselves. A total of fifty-seven students participated in this online survey and we collected their data and transferred them into a graph to visually demonstrate the student’s thoughts.
Here are what the students have to say:
- Would your parents be disappointed if you got a B?

- What grades do your parents expect from you?

- Do you believe you match your parent’s expectations?

- What are your own expectations for grades?

- Are you satisfied with your current grades?

- Do you believe you can improve your grades? If yes, please explain how

Here’s what students think they can do to improve their studying habits & grades: (Actual Responses)
- Turn off Netflix
- Study more
- Stop procrastinating
- Have a better work ethic by working harder and asking teachers more questions
- Focusing more on homework and studying
- Actually completing homework
- Quit a bunch of stuff to just do academics
- I can always do some other work in classes that I’m ahead in
- Dedicate more time to studying
- Keep a schedule to manage my time better
- I could improve by staying focused and on task instead of getting distracted
In conclusion, we are happy to see that students are setting high expectations for themselves and are striving for the best. We believe that it is important to be prepared, motivated, and skilled, but it is equally as important to have confidence when it comes to school work. Based on our observations from this school survey, we can see that students and their parents have high standards for their grades. Although they have planned out how to meet their expectations, the students seem to lack confidence. We highly encourage students to have more confidence when striving for the best, as having a positive mindset can lead to good results. Thank you, York Mills, for cooperating and participating in our online survey and we wish you the very best!
