Emily Hart

October 25th 2019

Many of us students at York Mills either have jobs or have considered applying for jobs to gain further work experience and to earn money. But, do we know our rights as student-employees? To test students on their legal knowledge and to educate them about the laws on student employment, the Law Council hosted their first Kahoot game on Friday October 25th in Titan Hall.

What do you call a rock that never goes to school? A skipping stone!

10/10/2019

Screen Shot 2019-11-03 at 2.23.09 PM.pngBeing in Mrs. Wong’s Earth and Space, this class is trained to constantly identify rocks, and try to learn as much about everyone we see. Earth and Space is a Grade twelve course, where we focus on earth materials, geologic history, and exploring all of space. We were excited for our very first field trip to sit in on Lectures, mini-classes ran by University of Toronto students, and tours of the St. George Campus, taking place on Thursday, October 10th.

Everyone had paid the fees, ran through the instructions, and all arrived on time (except me totally getting lost… photos are important) to our first class, Geologic Hazards in the Earth Sciences Department. Adventures (Field Trips) always start with rules. So we all were strictly told to look like university students, to look like we belonged in the building, not jumping around as York Mills students’ second nature. Next year, we would be running downtown in the morning regardless.

Poll : If grade 9 students had a choice would they have an extra year in middle school or York Mills?

Hearing talk about adding an extra year to your education may bring a feeling of dread to some students, but has been discussed by many school districts. Although an extra year of school is not mandatory in 2019, the future may hold that possibility. Adding an extra year of education may benefit students, and give them time to mature academically and developmentally. So we conducted a poll to find out whether grade 9 students would prefer to spend an extra year in middle school or York Mills CI. The results revealed that an extra year in middle school is preferred, most likely due to its lower stress, and relaxed academic rigor. Where would you want to spend an extra year of education?

New Clubs at York Mills

By: Katelyn Law

Joining clubs at York Mills could be arguably the best way to meet new people.  When a student joins a club, it allows them to meet people who have the same interests and connecting with them becomes much easier.  There are so many new clubs this school year, which means more opportunity in finding something that you can join. Below are just a few new and interesting clubs:

“I hope to start a broadcasting or media company to create inspirational content for others. While featuring on a podcast for CBC, it was enlightening to see the staff being creative and enjoying what they do. I would like to do something different every day while making another person’s day.” Celine Chung, a Grade 11 student at York Mills CI.

The Eco-Fair!

April 19th, 2019

Last Thursday, York Mills’ Eco-Council hosted the Eco-Fair, an event to spread awareness about the environment and to provide ways that everyone can help. The event ran outside the library and in Room 137, where many activities were set up for the student to try. Some of the events included an oil spill experiment, a raffle using TTC transfers, a raffle for good on one side (GOOS) paper, and cup pong to test your knowledge about the environment and which items to place in the proper receptacle.
