Senior Art Class: Charcoal Compositions

By: Khadija Hamza

If you are a returning student to York Mills, you have probably seen artwork displayed around the school. You can find it hanging in the library, in the display cases, and outside the office. Most of the art is done by the senior classes: the grade elevens, and twelves. One of the most prominent ones are the large charcoal compositions.

School Grades & Expectations

By: Nikta Nouraei

On Tuesday, October 16, on behalf of YM Highlights, we conducted an online survey for students. The survey consisted of six questions asking students about their school grades, their thoughts on their grades, and the standard they and their parents set for themselves. A total of fifty-seven students participated in this online survey and we collected their data and transferred them into a graph to visually demonstrate the student’s thoughts.

So…you got a C. What now?

By: Chantelle Yan

Its mocking gaze fixates on you. A lump forms in your throat, while the tumultuous thudding of your heartbeat echoes with the intervals of the classroom’s ticking clock. The chatter of your classmates grows distant and is gradually obscured in your surroundings. Did I get all A’s? Did I fail? What will my parents say? Should I look now or later? Should I even look at all? You reach towards the piece of paper to flip it over, but you are too paralyzed to move. Finally, you push through the currents of fear and tension that linger around the edges of the sickeningly blue coloured piece of paper, and you flip it over. Your eyes race down the page. A…B…A…C…? C? Did you just get a C?

Cafeteria Food Review

By: Areeba Naqi and Amani S.

The Titans of York Mills are passionate about their food, which is why we’ve received many responses regarding multiple changes that should be made to our cafeteria. The survey we conducted asked for multiple suggestions that could be made to the cafeteria system, from changing the menu to fixing the hour-long lines. Surprisingly many students wanted healthier options that look appealing and taste great. Students who filled out the survey gave an impressive rating of 7/10 to the food quality, which is considerably high compared to the critical written responses given. Main staples bought from the cafeteria includes; fries, patties, and cookies because full meals are not available in the express line and students with extracurriculars need to grab n’ go. The cafeteria’s constant variation in the menu seems to bother regular customers because their favourites may go missing. Which is why many Titans seemed to agree on publicizing the menu during the daily announcements, just to prep for the worst. In any case, the food is enjoyed by everyone but does need a little tinkering here and there. The main concerns lie within the unreasonable amount of time to takes to pick up food and why it isn’t fresh.

Senior Girls Basketball Team Off to a Rough Start This Season

By: Neusha Taheri

The York Mills Senior Girls’ basketball team played an outstanding game against A.Y. Jackson on Monday, October 15th. Although the girls lost the game, they worked incredibly well together and stayed positive when the game got hard. The score in the first quarter was equal; 2:2, but during the second quarter, A.Y. Jackson got ahead as they scored a four-pointer. The game ended with a tragic loss for York Mills, with the score being 16-23. After the game, I was lucky enough to interview player #12, Carita Chung, and was able to ask her about the season:
